The
process began in January with thirteen individual schemes. Working
swiftly through a series of collaborative efforts the group
came to a consensus by the end of February and began work on
a single proposal. Close contact with Ms Murphy and visits to the
site helped maintain focus on the weight of the task at hand.
Under
the guidance of SHoP Architects and studio critic David Lewis
(Director, Master of Architecture Program at Parson’s) the
team continued to refine their design and tackle important issues
regarding concept,
cost and constructability. Once a final design proposal was accepted
by the client, a full set of construction documents were drafted
as well as full scale material tests for the academic reviews in
May.
As
part of this process the
students worked through nearly all aspects of architectural
design and construction: critical path planning, budget, material
ordering, structural calculations, code regulations, legal permits,
subcontracting, publicity, etc.
in addition to design, autocad drafting, digital and physical
modeling, and representation expected of a conventional semester. A
two-part construction process, under the guidance of Terry Erikson
and Joel Stoehr, is due to begin early this summer. The first phase,
which will begin as
soon
as
classes
are
finished
for the spring semester, takes place in New York City where the
team will pre-fabricate a limited portion
of
the
project. Beginning in the third week of June, the group will
travel down to Mississippi to assemble the structure, exterior
cladding and interior finish work to complete construction in the
end of August. Occupation of the facilities is projected for September.
