The
Laundromat and Information Center are contained within two volumes
separated
by a breezeway which functions
as a gateway between future development and SHoP’s recently
constructed business incubator.
The
building’s form was inspired
by its dual role as refuge and information exchange. A wrapping
of materials conveys a sheltering atmosphere while the open south
elevation draws visitors toward the information. A porch wraps
the south corner offering shade and shelter over looking a play
ground area adjacent to the building and near a day care located
in the incubator.
A
luminous north elevation of lit poly carbonate under a gradient
of cedar slatting faces future development serves as a glowing
beacon for the residents.
The
custom built furniture is arranged into
bars separating the spaces into
adaptable functions:
wash -
laundry machines and mechanical space
fold - laundry care
wait - a multi-function bench
info - a
public information and internet station
office - a
document
repository and workstation for full and part time staff
